Being a Part of Something Important

Posted on

I had the honor of photographing the Avon Foundation’s Breast Cancer Forum which brings together the recipients of the foundation’s funding to discuss the findings of their breast cancer research over the past year.  It is a very important event because it encourages awareness and collaboration among the nation’s greatest breast cancer researchers.

My job was to document the event via photographs, showing their collaboration throughout the various speaker presentations and social events throughout the day.  But so much more happened that day.

As I was photographing the event, I felt a sense of being a part of something important.  Sure I was just the photographer there to document the event, but it was more than that.  The people in that room are changing lives – SAVING lives.  It was beautiful.  To see them sharing their ideas and their passion for ridding this planet of cancer was moving.  I think some people may have just seen a corporate meeting with a bunch of PhD’s, but somehow, the event allowed me to feel like I was able to contribute to the cause.  Okay, so I’m never going to be a scientist who cures cancer, but I can help contribute to the effort in my own little way.  I am grateful to have been a part of it.

The Avon Foundation doesn’t just support Breast Cancer Research, it also has initiatives in Domestic Violence Prevention and Emergency Relief.  Find out more:  http://www.avonfoundation.org/about-us.html
